For a lot of people, college is starting up again pretty soon! Whether it’s your first year or you’re returning for your second, third, or forth, there may be a chance that you’re living on campus and either dorming by yourself or with a roomie!
I love the culture around dorms, and getting excited about post-secondary has no doubt a lot to do with how you’ll decorate your dorm space, the place you’ll do your homework, and sleep and eat for the next few months or ago.
With that said, I collected some of my favorite cute and affordable dorm decor ideas that you will absolutely love. With gallery wall ideas and memory collages on the walls, no matter what, there is an idea here for everyone!
Dorm Decor Ideas
1. Cozy Raised Bed

If you’re going to be working with a tiny dorm room, a raised bed is one of the easiest ways to create extra storage.
I love how the bed skirt hides everything underneath and keeps the room quite clean. You can easily recreate this look on a budget with budget blankets, a simple bed skirt from Amazon and a few comfy pillows!
2. Personalized Bulletin Board

One of the easiest ways to make your dorm feel more like home is with a personalized bulletin board! Fill it with photos of your favorite people, little notes, postcards, or anything else that makes you smile.
The cute banner and ribbon details on this one give so much personality, but you can obviously just recreate this look with only cheap cork board and printed pictures.
3. Build a Cozy Gallery Wall

One of the issues with dorms is trying to decorate the wall space. If your walls are looking a little plain, a gallery wall is an easy way to bring the whole room together. Mixing framed prints with a small mirror adds character without making the space feel too cluttered.
Side note, I love the string lights that run across the wall. I can definitely tell they make everything feel extra cozy at night and are one of the easiest ways to decorate on a budget!
4. Cute Throw Pillows & Blankets

Never underestimate what a few throw pillows and a cozy blanket can do for your dorm room! Layering different patterns and textures instantly makes your bed feel way more inviting, and it’s such an easy way to add personality.
If you love a soft, vintage-esqe look, getting some floral bedding paired with gingham pillows is the ultimate combination. I also love plaid bedsheets too! The ones from Taylor Swift’s ‘All Too Well: The Short Film’ features such an effortless and comfy looking bed.
5. Soft Decorative Touches

Sometimes it’s these little details that make a dorm room extra cozy. The ribbon garland, the mini disco ball and the wall decor add a lot of charm for a dorm that can start out so b land.
I really like the mix of soft pink accents and cute plush pillows on the bed. If you’re decorating on a budget, adding a few small touches like these can change the feel of your dorm room so much.
6. Favorite Memories Collage

Looking for a single way to personalize your dorm room? Find a blank wall in your dorm room (if you have any left!) and fill it with your favorite photos from home, high-school, or ones you’ve taken at college so far.
Matching frames keep everything look put together and cohesive, even if the pictures are all different colors. I think these are such a sweet reminder of the people you love, especially on days when you’re feeling a bit homesick.
7. Dorm Kitchen Nook

You definitely don’t need a full kitchen to create a cute little coffee and snack station! A small dorm shouldn’t stop you either! I love this setup and how it makes really good use of vertical storage by adding shelves about the mini fridge.
The retro-style fridge is absolutely adorable and everything you need is within easy reach. It’s super practical, and amazing for some dorm decor.
8. Maximizing Under Bed Storage

It’s not uncommon that you won’t have a lot of storage to come by in your dorm room, so you shouldn’t let all the space under your bed go to waste!
This setup uses drawers and storage bins to keep everything neat and clutter-free! I love how the soft bedding and blush blanket make the room feel super cozy, even with all the extra storage tucked underneath.
9. Decorate Around Natural Light

I love a dorm that has a big window. If yours does as well, definitely make it the focal point of the room. Sheer curtains let in plenty of natural light while making the space open and airy.
Add a few small plants on the windowsill for some greenery too! This is a really simple dorm decor idea but the whole room looks and feels so bright and inviting!
10. Adding a Cozy Rug

I know floors can be a big issue in dorm rooms. Sometimes they’re too bright or dark, other times they can be bad quality.
A good fix for these problems and another way to decorate your dorm room is to add a colorful rug that instantly warms up the space and makes it feel more like home!
I also feel it’s so much nicer to step onto a small rug instead of a cold dorm floor every morning, lol.

Decorating your dorm doesn’t have to be expensive at all! In my opinion I think the best looks are ones that required minimal effort that didn’t require too much planning. If you ‘plan’ too hard, your dorm decor doesn’t look natural.
I also think it’s a bit chic for your dorm to be a little bit cluttered here and there. Whether that can be considered it’s own aesthetic or not,
I kind of love the vibe of a slightly busy dorm space. Perhaps because it makes the dorm feel more lived in.
Either way, I hope these ideas inspired you for your own dorm room decor, whether you’re just about to start college, or you’re still in high school already preparing for the years to come!
